Street History of Barrie
On May 15th in 1833 William Hawkins, a provincial land surveyour registered a blue print for the site of Barrie in the township of Vespra and the county of Simcoe. Commodore Barrie is thought to have been present when the original street names were chosen. Dr. "Tiger" Dunlop or his brother Captain Robert Dunlop are thought to be the name sakes for Barrie's main street. Collier Street is also somewhat of a mystery, a choice between Sir George Collier or possibly Edward Collier and captain at that time. Worsley and Poyntz were named after naval captains of frigates on the Great Lakes. Clapperton was named after a captain of a gun boat. Ross street was probably named after the surveyor who owned a large tract of land abutting it. Most names are thought to be taken from Military figures of the time. Barrie is now one of the largest towns supporting Base Borden, a training base, and regulary hosts military commanders to commemorate events.

The city of Barrie was created at the end of the nine-mile portage and was originally on Toronto Lake, as Lake Simcoe was known then. In 1814 the British Expeditionary forces used the Toronto Carrying Place and the Nine Mile Portage to reach Lake Huron. It is at the Nine Mile Portage that the birth of Barrie began. This was an alternative route that grew out of the need for a route to replace the Ottawa French river route that was closed by the successes of the Americans in the Detroit area efectively closing that route off to the British.
Liet.-Governor Simcoe memorialized his father by changing the name of Toronto Lake to Lake Simcoe. He then named the surrounding bays after his friends and teachers. Todays Highway 93 closely follows the route from Kempenfelt Bay to Penetanquishene harbour. Willow creek has been the site of recent restoration in commemoration of the portages and forts that were built in that era.
It was during the building of the "Nine Mile Portage" that the city of Barrie was created. Most of the streets still exist to this day, with the exception of Marks Street, which was lost to Simcoe Street and Sunnidale Road, which was lost to Ross Street and Macdougall which was lost to McDonald Street. There was a wharf being operated at the end of Owen street and according to note of the day the water level was at four and half feet, this is much higher than the levels of today. The 1842 survey of Barrie by Thomas Parke some of the street names that Hawkins survey had indicated.
Barrie, was the county seat at the time the first railway was built and at the time had declined to contribute to the new railway. This lack of support on the part of Barrie is thought to be the main reason the railway bypassed Barrie and ended up in Allendale. The railway had its start with "Conflict of Interest" issues when the city of Toronto issued debentures to fund the railway and with this knowledge the Toronto Mayor and Hincks apparently purchased them at a twenty percent discount. The conflict continued with Barrie city members and thus Allendale ended up with the railway. Barrie tried for 12 years to gain access to the railway, then finally when the track was extended to Orillia, Barrie finally got its railway. No the railway track has been downgraded to a walking trail, It is ironic that the return of the railway was originally planned for the old depot located in Allendale.
A letter from W.H. Smith mentions the "much thought about canal" which was never to be with the opening of the railway line. He said:
Should the contemplated canal from Kempenfelt to Lake Huron through Willow Creek and the Nottawasaga River ever be formed, Barrie, which is now in the woods, will have uninnterupted water communication with the St Lawrence. At present the road from Barrie to Holland Landing, is, in the spring and the fall, almost impassable for waggons. The road to Penetanguishene is much better, running for the most part along a stony ridge of land. The banks of the bay have a rather sombre appearance, being almost devoid of clearing: most of the timber on the banks is pine. Town lots of a quarter of an acre, in the old survey (or original town-plot) are in the hands of private individuals, and sell from 20 to 50 lbs each, some higher. ( this is an excerpt from Smith's Canadian Gazeteer for 1846)
78,965. City in Simcoe C. at the head of Kempenfelt Bay offL. Simcoe and Hwys 26 & 400 and C. Rds. 4,20,40 & 90,78 km N of Toronto. The first building was a Hudson's Bay Company storehouse in 1812. The first dwelling was a log house built in 1815 for Sir George Head, who had come to supervise a proposed naval establishment at Penetanguishene, 49 km NW on Severn Sound off Georgian Bay. The settlement was first called Nine Mile Portage. The portage was cleared during the War of 1812 as a supply route to military establishments at Penetanguishene. It ran from the site of present-day Barrie at the headwaters of Kempenfeldt Bay to Willow Cr. In 1812 the site of Barrie was surveyed by Capt. Oliver of the Royal Navy, who bought land and called the place Barry for Capt. Robert Barry, commander of the 15th Regiment of York. When the post office opened in 1832, it was named Barrie after (British) Commodore Robert Barrie, who . In 1831, nine black veterans of 'the War of 1812 accepted land grants along what is now Wilberforce Street, forming the only government-sponsored black settlement in Upper Canada. A community of about 100 settlers flourished briefly, but the poor soil and harsh dimate discouraged them and the settlement was gradually abandoned. Barrie has been home to many prominent people over the years. Hewitt Bernard (1825-1893) was a native of Jamaica who settled in Barrie in 1851 and opened a law practice. He accompanied John A. Macdonald to the Charlottetown conference in 1864 and served as secretary of the Quebec and London Conferences, which laid the groundwork for Confederation. Andrew Frederick Hunter (1863-1940) was an active member of the Canadian Institute and the Ontario Historical Society. He undertook extensive research on the history and archaeology of Huronia, and his published Writings encouraged the study of local history throughout the province. William Edward Gallie (1882-1959) was a distinguished surgeon and teacher. While practicing at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto he devised revolutionary techniques in tissue transplant and bone repair that are now practiced throughout the world The city holds North America's largest annual dog show, Canada's largest flea market, and a winter carnival on the frozen waters of Kempenfelt Bay. Barrie's oldest public building is an octagonal jail completed in 1842 and still in use. In 2004, Barrie was the site of the biggest drug bust ever staged in Canada. Police raided a former brewery beside busy Hwy 400 and seized $30 million of marijuana and sophisticated agricultural equipment.
